We often talk about EPR usability as if it’s just about navigating screens. But the real impact goes far deeper.
By Chloe Watson, Principal Consultant at Ethical Healthcare Consulting
When an electronic patient record system is hard to use, every task a staff member completes becomes slower, heavier and more frustrating. And that friction doesn’t stay contained, it ripples.
Poor user experience affects far more than digital satisfaction. It shapes:
- Clinical safety — harder workflows mean missed information, delayed decisions and increased risk.
- Productivity — slow logins, clunky workflows and duplicated documentation drag down patient flow across whole pathways.
- Workforce wellbeing — frustrating admin processes fuel burnout and reduce time with patients.
- Operational and financial performance — inefficiency at the frontline becomes missed targets, rising costs and unrealised benefits.
A user’s “digital experience” isn’t just the interface. It’s everything they must do to record activity accurately, safely and efficiently so patients move through the pathway at the right time.
When the EPR works well, care moves well. When it doesn’t, the ripple effect is felt everywhere.
